A Very Confetti Home

The installation above is by far the most inspiring thing I came across last week. Artist Yayoi Kusama created an amazingly stark white interior and let children decorate with thousands of colorful dot stickers in her aptly titled exhibit, “The Obliteration Room.” Not only is it an amazing idea, it looks awesome! The photos reminded me a bit of the recent confetti craze.. colorful, whimsical and a little silly. Confetti has been permeating the styling world for quite a while now, but the multi-colored polka dot look is also trickling down into product design. I only did a little bit of hunting, but it seems totally possible to decorate a room in your home to look like Kusama’s exhibit without the help of a single sticker.

Tempting, but so ridiculous! Maybe just the whippets then…?

Watercolor Brushstrokes

Michelle Armas and her amazing paintings have been popping up all over the place lately, and with good reason. The colors and technique are whimsical, and I can’t help but be captivated by most of the pieces in her portfolio.

When I came across this Once Wed post on Michelle’s painted votive project, I felt inspired to do a (belated) recap of some fun pieces to come out of the watercolor décor trend. Pure magic..

Knot Bad

I love knots, and this lovely knot above (photo via JJJJound) might as well be a work of art. This would be a simple thing to recreate as trivets, coasters or wall art! I can picture a wall covered in different types of flat knots.. hmm.. maybe a fun project to finish before spring? If you’re feeling inclined, Design*Sponge has a great tutorial on imitating this “carrick bend” style beauty.

Geometric Splendor

This photo posted by Miss Heather of New York Shitty has been stuck in my brain since she shared it last month. This gem was spotted on the corner of Noble St. and West St. in Greenpoint, and is apparently the remnants of a recent photo shoot at this location. While one half of my brain is preoccupied with making plans to conduct my own shoot there before it disappears, the other half is spinning excitedly with ideas inspired by this gorgeous muted palette and super simple geometric pattern!

White and Whimsical

I stumbled across the above photo of Milla Jojovich on This is Glamorous and fell in love. The little girl in me squeals with excitement when I think about going at an oversized canvas in a whimsical “dress-up” dress. A childhood dream come true? From the colorful doodling to the white feathered fringe, you bet it is.

The collage below gives a bit of a peek into my imagination. It took me some time to get it right, but I think this sums up my girlish fantisies quite well. If I were to throw a party in honor of daydreams, this eclectic and ethereal mix may just do them justice.

A Field of Stripes

Loved this photo when I came across it on FFFFOUND! (via aspire to enquire). Unfortunately, I can’t locate the original, but it’s a brilliant landscape regardless of the “why?” or “how?”

Taking inspiration from these painted fields, I pulled together the pieces below. Bright, multicolor stripes paired with less dramatic solids make for an interesting combo in the home.

A Post-Turkey Return

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

Didn’t get the chance to post last week, since I was running around prepping for (and ultimately enjoying!) the holiday. Lots of fun crammed into the last 5 days or so… I’m still trying to recover! Not only did I have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, I played hostess for our 5th annual “friendsgiving” on Saturday, aptly titled Thanksgiving 2 (or T-Givs 2 for short). Flaming marshmallow drama aside, it was a wonderful time spent with my favorite people, sharing my favorite foods.

The photo above is of a little arrangement I put together for the celebration, inspired by found items from the Fall. Shadow boxes and floating frames were used to display various nuts, cinnamon sticks, leafs, feathers and a few fabric scraps that tied in with my palette. Glass bottles wrapped in twine held branches and floral stems, while pine cones and mason jar votives punctuated the display. For the focal point, I affixed unfinished wooden letters (custom made by woodenletters.net) to a 24″ x 36″ canvas and propped up the number 2 in front for added dimensionality.

I didn’t document my work in progress, but everything here is easily DIY-able! The bottles did take a while to wrap, but I love the way they turned out. Super cheap to make, and the end result is something that I’ll get a lot of use from! All of the frames will also be recycled for other projects, or become a part of everyday décor.

Magical Stained Glass

Loving this photo featured on Apartment Therapy from this year’s Bienalle International Art Exhibit in Venice. The colorful reflection on the floor is from American artist Spencer Finch’s ”Moonlight” installation, an ode to stained glass created by applying gel filters to existing windows throughout the space. The hanging incandescent bulbs make up Finch’s “Moondust,” which complement the windows and add a magical feeling to the room. Check out more photos from: Spring Globe’s flickr

The colors and lighting in this picture are absolutely gorgeous. Stained glass is incredibly dramatic, and the idea of creating a simple and temporary stained glass window with colored film is brilliant. Maybe one day I’ll take that up as a DIY project! In the meantime, here are some easy ways to instantly incorporate a stained glass feel into your home décor.
